BLACK WALL STREET

In 1921, in a small community in Tulsa Oklahoma, there was a Black paradise called Greenwood.  This community consisted of Blacks, who fled the oppression of the South; to carve out for themselves their place in history.  They formed a peculiar society of Blacks, Indians and Jews, who respeted and did business with each other.  In time, some of the Blacks who happened to settle on oil rich land became incredibly wealthy.  So wealthy, in fact, that the town was soon known as Black Wall Street.  In a mere 36 block section of town, these African-Americans owned and operated up to 600 thriving businesses.

One of the most popular of these businesses was Old Lady Boley’s, an eating establishment which is where our play begins.  One Sunday evening, the town’s more influential citizens gathered to have their pictures taken for the local newspaper; in honor of the community’s 20th anniversary.  Before the play ends, the entire community of Greenwood is completely burned to the ground.  In a 12 hour period, a major Black economic movement is halted.

5X FAVELA: NOW BY OURSELVES | 2010
BRAZIL | PORTUGUESE WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | 96 MINUTES

5x Favela is composed of five short films all written, directed, and acted by promising artists from the favelas of Brazil’s Rio. The culmination of a years-long project to cultivate talented young filmmakers from the favelas (slums), 5x Favela’s well-crafted episodes offer a rare glimpse of the dynamic culture emerging from these communities, debunking the popular myth that favelas are merely hotbeds of drugs and violence. 5x Favela includes:

Source of Income
 (Manaíra Carneiro, Wagner Novais)
A young man fulfils his dream to go to Law University, but is faced with difficulties paying for his expenses in terms of books and transportation. He feels tempted to sell drugs to his friends at university, thus raising the money to fund his studies.

Concert for Violin (Luciano Vidigal)
The children Márcia, Jota and Ademir vow to remain friends forever. Later, in their adulthood, Jota is involved in drug trafficking while Ademir has joined the police force. If the two are brought against each other, Márcia may be prevented from fulfilling her dream to play the violin.

Let It Fly
 (Cadu Barcellos)
Flávio lets his friend’s kite fall across the other quarter of the favela, which is run by a rival gang. Even though he is aware of the prohibition, Flávio decides to collect the kite.

Let There Be Light
 (Luciana Bezerra)

Wow so detailed and such an interesting read. Reminded me of my trip there years ago.

Chasing dreams is what I do best!

I arrived in Cairo, Egypt on September 20th at around 1 PM after enjoying a conversation with an American man from Texas on the short 2 hour and 15 minute flight from Istanbul, Turkey.  As I stepped off the plane onto the jet way, I realized I was in the motherland.  I was breathing African air for the first time and as my lungs continued to expand and deflate, I started to feel a little emotional.  Yeah, I know that sounds corny and all but I had always wanted to feel African soil beneath my feet and the time had finally arrived.  I was so excited I practically ran to get my passport stamped, passing many of the passengers who had disembarked before me.  I joined the line of about 3 people and when it was my turn the really official, serious looking guy in the military looking uniform said,

THE PIANO LESSON

by August Wilson

Directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson

August Wilson is one of our most celebrated playwrights!  Role Call members experienced his magic when we saw Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Fences and Jitney. In THE PIANO LESSON, family legacy and how this legacy is best put to use takes center stage. THE PIANO LESSON is a powerful family drama, so let’s show up at the theater and give this fantastic playwright his due!

ABOUT THE PIANO LESSON

In his second Pulitzer Prize-winner, THE PIANO LESSON, August Wilson has fashioned his most haunting and dramatic work.

At the heart of the play stands the ornately carved upright piano which, as the Charles family’s prized, hard-won possession, has been gathering dust in the parlor of Berniece Charles’s Pittsburgh home. When Boy Willie, Berniece’s exuberant brother, bursts into her life with his dream of buying the same Mississippi land that his family had worked as slaves, he plans to sell their antique piano for the hard cash he needs to stake his future. But Berniece refuses to sell, clinging to the piano as a reminder of the history that is their family legacy. This dilemma is the real “piano lesson,” reminding us that blacks are often deprived both of the symbols of their past and of opportunity in the present.

Set in 1936, THE PIANO LESSON is a powerful play from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Fences and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. A sister and brother fight over a piano that has been in the family for three generations, creating a remarkable drama that embodies the painful past and expectant future of black Americans.

Overview

Signature returns to the rich body of work of its 2006/07 Playwright-in-Residence August Wilson with a new production of his Pulitzer Prize-winning The Piano Lesson. In Pittsburgh’s Hill District in 1936, the Charles family battle their surroundings and each other over their shared legacy — an antique piano.
The fourth play of August Wilson’s epic Century Cycle, The Piano Lesson is a stunning and moving drama of family, history, and survival.

Taylor’s sophomore album, Confessional, came out in 2009. In the midst of times that are trying both economically and emotionally, the album revives the true meaning of sacrifice, giving sensually starved listeners an intimate view of romantic relationships draped in musical decadence. Open your ears and receive this blessing.

Russell Taylor has the educational pedigree and the street cred to bridge the chasm between the block and yacht. His musical C.V. is formidable – he’s shared stages with some of his generation’s most respected musicians, including Mary J. Blige, Musiq Soulchild, Jill Scott, India Arie, Mint Condition, Tamia, Rahsaan Patterson, Jaguar, Eric Roberson, Lalah Hathaway, and Omar. With this kind of resume, it should be no surprise that Taylor regularly woos audiences from Paris to L.A., where they swoon over his soulful voice, pristine good looks, seductive smile, and genuinely affable personality.

Broadway’s Recent Hit

THE MOUNTAINTOP!

Fifteen years after the genocide in Rwanda, many of the mass murderers are being released from prison and returning to their villages. Many of them are returning to mothers who have given birth to other men’s children in their absence and a future of uncertainty.  Their teenage children, who grew up without them, must now come to terms with their fathers’ legacies.  Will these children carry on the heritage of their fathers or will they resist the weight of their history?

Inspired by Katori Hall’s trip to Rwanda in 2009 and commissioned by London’s National Theatre, CHILDREN OF KILLERS is an eye-opening, moving production and an impressive piece of theater!

FEATURING WORKS BY

—————————————–

FOR ACTORS: The Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) is looking for actors to take part in a new program called the Playwright’s Playground. It is designed for playwrights to hear cold readings of scenes from their works in progress and for actors to become acquainted with the work of emerging writers while they take an important role in the creation of new plays.

The next Playground session will be on Monday, August 27th, from 7 pm – 10 pm at the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Center on 165th Street and Broadway. All actors must arrive at 6:30 and check in with either Debra Cardona or her assistant Pia Wilson in order to be cast in a scene. Because so many actors are interested in participating, there is no guarantee that you will be cast each time, but we will do our best to accommodate you. There are some incredible playwrights lined up, and it is important to us that a truly diverse group of artists are a part of this endeavor.

If you are interested in participating, all you need do is arrive at 6:30 on a Playwright’s Playground Monday. The dates and all pertinent details are listed below.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Best,
Debra Cardona
Administrator, Playwright’s Playground

pages-video

What is the Playwright’s Playground and how does it work?

One Monday of each month will be designated as Playwright’s Playground Mondays. Interested playwrights may submit a 10- to 12-page scene from a work in progress, and, if chosen to participate, a Monday will be assigned to them. Up to five playwrights will be featured at each Playground. The night of the Playground, CTH will provide copies of the scenes and cast actors to read from those attending the Playground. (NOTE: full plays are not read at the Playground, only 10-12 page scenes)

PLAYGROUND DATES FOR FALL 2012:

September 17, October 15, November 12

All Playwright’s Playground Mondays will take place from 7 pm – 10 pm at The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Education Center, which is located at 3940 Broadway at 165th Street. Take the A, C or 1 train to 168th Street and walk south to 165th Street. The Shabazz Center is on the east side of the street opposite the hospital. Take the stairs at the rear of the lobby to the second floor.

With a blistering combination of punk and funk they demolished the walls of genre and challenged the racial stereotypes and the political order of the music industry and of the nation. Everyday Sunshine is about music, history, fear, courage and funking on the one. Narrated by Lawrence Fishburne, this roc doc features Gwen Stefani, Ice-T, Tim Robbins, Branford Marsalis and more.

B2: Hotlist! #65

Greetings Community,

What a crazy few weeks it’s been.  All good with work but I haven’t had a chance to catch my breath I’m glad to say.

So Tony Season is upon us and there are lot’s of events and shows to see.  I hope you’ve selected your favorites.  As many of you may know we normally throw a large Tony Award Viewing event but with the number of projects we have been working on we just didn’t feel we had the time.  Yet here I am announcing that we will in fact be having an intimate viewing party at Billie’s Black in the Heart of Harlem on Sunday, June 10th, 2012.  There is NO COVER CHARGE just show up and let’s enjoy the show.  Oh did I mention that I created a signature cocktail for the evening…it’s called…”The Porgy & Bess”…you don’t want to miss that.

Also we are producing an All Male Vocalist show singing the music of the iconic Phyllis Hyman on Thur. June 28th, 2012 again at Billie’s Black.  I would recommend making reservations for both shows in advance, Billie’s is an intimate venue and fills up fast.

Finally we are producing a reunion show that my business partner created 20 years ago in Los Angeles.  So yes Black 2: Broadway is traveling to L.A. to present “Sean Hollingsworth’s Singer’s L.A.” on Thur. July 5th, 2012.

Those are just some of the projects we have been working on.  Now you understand why it’s been such a crazy few weeks.  I do want to point out that it hasn’t been all work and no play.  We’d like to send a special thank you again to Ruth J. Morrison and What’s The 411? for bestowing upon Sean and I their Vanguard Award for our work on and off the Broadway Stage supporting performers of Color.  It was truly an honor and thank you just doesn’t seem enough.

That’s it for now, enjoy the latest B2: Hotlist, make your reservations early and we’ll see you all behind the lights.

As Always,

Kevin-Anthony

Pastor Margaret Alexander insists on living a purely religious life. Her duplicity is exposed and the relationships with her son and congregation are threatened with the arrival of her long-estranged husband.
Set in 1950’s Harlem, THE AMEN CORNER, is a classic play about the role of the Christian Church in the lives of African Americans both as a source of repression and moral hypocrisy and as a source of inspiration and community.

Under the direction of renowned director WALTER DALLAS, Tony Award® winners CHUCK COOPER, LILLIAS WHITE, and ADRIANE LENOX and a cast of brilliant actors and distinguished media personalities will bring the seminal work by author, playwright and activist JAMES BALDWIN to life.

Join Project1Voice, in association with the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College (524 W. 59th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues in NYC), for its second annual 1 VOICE, 1 PLAY, 1 DAY — a national celebration of Black Theater — on Monday, June 18, 2012 at 7pm. Tickets are $25 and $50 and $15 for students with ID. To purchase tickets call 631.464.7421 or visit www.project1voice.org.

Proceeds from this benefit staged reading of James Baldwin’s THE AMEN CORNER will help keep Black Theater live, vital and strong!
