Greetings Community,

As Always,

See THINGS OF DRY HOURS for as little as $32.50!

New York Theatre Workshop presents

Things of Dry Hours

Written by Naomi Wallace

Directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson

Featuring Garret Dillahunt, Delroy Lindo, Roslyn Ruff

Naomi Wallace’s Things of Dry Hours marks the return to the New York stage of famed stage and screen star Delroy Lindo, who received Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations for his last Broadway appearance in the original Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Lindo is joined on stage by OBIE Award-winner Roslyn Ruff, who just earned rave reviews for her performance in Athol Fugard’s Coming Home at Long Wharf and Garret Dillahunt (No Country for Old Men). Set in Depression-era Alabama, Things of Dry Hours tells the story of Tice Hogan (Lindo), an African American out-of-work Sunday school teacher and member of the Communist Party, and his daughter Cali (Ruff) whose lives get turned upside down when they take in a mysterious white factory worker (Dillahunt) on the run. Tony Award-winning actor, writer and producer Ruben Santiago-Hudson (Lackawanna Blues, Seven Guitars) directs.

2009 National Black Theatre Festival

Please mark your calendar for the 20th anniversary of the 2009 National Black Theatre Festival. The festival will be held August 3-8, 2009 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  The theme for this year’s festival remains the same as the past ten festivals: An International Celebration and Reunion of Spirit.

Ted Lange and Wendy Raquel Robinson will serve as co-chairs at this year’s festival.  The festival is a biennial event that brings together the black theatre companies of America and the world.   This year’s festival will offer a wide range of theatrical performances including drama, comedies, musicals, choreoplays and multi-media.  Choose from more than 116 performances of new works and Black classics performed by professional Black theatre companies from across the country and Cape Town, South Africa.
This historic event illuminates the powerful theatrical spirit and extraordinary talent of Black performers, designers, directors, producers and technicians worldwide.  You will experience electrifying performances, informative workshops, riveting films and insightful spoken word that will open your eyes to a new perspective on our culture’s artistic endeavors.

On Monday, August 3rd, the Opening Night Gala & Awards Banquet will open with a vibrant parade of powerful African drummers and dancers followed by a grand and royal procession of more than 50 celebrities of television, film and stage. The second part of this marvtastic evening will be a production of Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope, presented by the North Carolina Black Repertory Company. Some members from the original Broadway cast will be in attendance.  The third part of the evening culminates with a star-studded reception and festive dancing until the last beat of the African drums.

You can enjoy the festival’s nightly Celebrity Receptions, National Black Film Festival, Midnight Poetry Jam (hosted by Malcolm-Jamal Warner), National Youth Talent Showcase, NBTF TeenTastic (Collaborative Teen Initiative), NBTF Artists Networking Showcase, NBTF Fringe, The Readers’ Theatre, International Colloquium, Storytelling Festival, Collegiate Play Reading Marathon, Workshops & Seminars, the International Vendor’s Market, and much more.  At least 6,000 youth will be served by the Youth/Celebrity Project. Over 50,000 people are expected to attend this marvtastic theatrical experience.

Come out and celebrate with Black Betty, as she brings her sexy act to Ashford and Simpson’s Sugar Bar this Friday, May 8th at 8:30pm.

Unique, cute, and provocative, Black Betty’s persona has been compared to Marilyn Monroe, Eartha Kitt, and Betty Boop.  Expect sexy standards like “Fever” and “Diamonds” interspersed with bluesy, moody numbers like “I Put A Spell On You” and “Stormy Weather”-along with a few surprises.

You won’t be disappointed by this truly gifted performer.

Bettye Lavette
w/ special guest Ryan Shaw
Thursday June 25 @ 7pm & 9:30pm

tickets $45 in advance/$50 day of

Bettye LaVette is one of the greatest soul singers in music history, possessed of an incredibly expressive voice that one moment will exude a formidable level of strength and intensity and the next will appear vulnerable, reflective, reeking of heartbreak. Bettye has performed her power-packed show around the world as well as starred in the Tony-nominated Broadway show, “Bubbling Brown Sugar” with the legendary Cab Calloway.

Ryan Shaw, a 26 year-old singer/songwriter from Decatur, Georgia, is out to revive the passion and soul of the Golden Age of Rhythm & Blues for a new generation. His debut album, This Is Ryan Shaw, combines a powerfully expressive voice with a clutch of great songs both classic and new.
