From Lynn Nottage, the Obie Award-winning author of such plays as Fabulation and Intimate Apparel comes this extremely topical and highly acclaimed new work. A co-production with the Goodman Theatre, where it debuted to a shower of rave reviews, RUINED is a haunting, probing play about the resilience of the human spirit during times of war.
Set in a small mining town in Democratic Republic of Congo, this powerful story follows Mama Nadi, a shrewd businesswoman who provides precarious shelter to women in a land torn apart by civil war. But is she protecting or profiting by the women she shelters? How far will she go to survive? Can a price be placed on a human life? Directing is Kate Whoriskey, who staged Ms. Nottage’s Fabulation at Playwrights Horizons.

“A VIBRANT and SUPERBLY ACTED production of a RICHLY STIRRING new play. ‘RUINED’ CONVEYS HOPEFULNESS.”
-Frank Scheck, New York Post

“BEAUTIFUL and UNPRETENTIOUSLY IMPORTANT. Lynn Nottage and
Kate Whoriskey have created A SHATTERING, INTIMATE

Scandalous People
A Sizzling Jazzical

Libretto by Myla Churchill
Music Composed by Benny Russell

Directed by Fredi Walker-Browne
Choreographed by Obediah Wright
Musical Direction by Tommy James
Musical Orchestration by Christopher J. Tuccillo
Lighting Design by Natalie Robin
Costume Design by Lisa McFadden
Sound Design by Sean O’Halloran

Set in a 1920s Harlem speakeasy, Scandalous People is a “jazzical” rife with leggy chorus girls, vaudevillian antics, backstage drama and comedy. The story revolves around Dewey Demarkov, an African-American showman and resident impresario of the Do Drop Inn. Dewey’s innovative productions garner the praise and attention of the infamous Mae West, who wants a show built around her; and the notorious gangster Dutch Schultz, who’s looking for a foray into Harlem’s speakeasy scene. With their money and support, Dewey’s dream of mounting a groundbreaking black and white revue on racially polarized Broadway seems within reach…but at what cost?

another Man's Poison image

NOTHING IS AS IT APPEARS TO BE

WRITTEN BY GEORGE O. BROME

DIRECTED BY PASSION HANSOME

PRODUCED BY SHEILA SPELLER

ORIELLE CREATIVE COMPANY

When struggling comedian, Frankie Masters, finally gets his shot at his own network television show in 1970, his imminent success exposes the hidden conflict and mounting turmoil of his personal life. It’s a pivotal time in our history, where the Vietnam War, exposing the racial divide, and the politicizing of sexual identity, all conspire to add depth and texture to the drama. A potent six character play — 3 Black, 3 White, is a quintessential Hollywood story with a distinct New York bite. …ANOTHER MAN’S POISON feeds our incessant desire to peer into the “making of a celebrity”.

It is the story of family, reaching for goals, and the choices that are made along the way.
