In Hebrew, HaMapah / המפה means “the tablecloth” or “the map.” HaMapah / המפה weaves contemporary dance with archival material, personal interviews, Yiddish and American songs, and video set to traditional, contemporary, and classical music. In HaMapah / המפה, McKinney explores issues of culture, self-hood, and community.

In exploring his African, Jewish, and Native American heritages, McKinney dances the personal and the collective, the local and the global, and the present and the past. HaMapah/המפה invites audiences to consider and envision the possibility of a global Jewish identity.

As part of the program, immediately following the performance, DNAWORKS Co-Directors McKinney and Banks will lead a community dialogue with the audience about the core ideas of the piece.

The Music of the Modern Jazz Quartet

Modern Jazz QuartetWho/What:

For nearly 50 years they were the greatest of all jazz super-groups, in which the deep, classically-inspired compositional style of pianist John Lewis was brilliantly counterbalanced by the blues-drenched approach of vibraphonist Milt Jackson.  Yet the distinctive music of The Modern Jazz Quartet survives even the remarkable men who created it, as drummer/music director Lewis Nash, NEA Jazz Master pianist Kenny Barron, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, bassist Peter Washington, and special guest guitarist Jim Hall show in this program of MJQ classics like “Django” and “Bag’s Groove.”

Shared Space Initiative is a partnership between Harlem Arts Alliance and Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance with support from Community Works, Dwyer Cultural Center and the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation.  Limited rehearsal, workshop, and classroom space for artists and arts groups available, for up to (12) hours only per request, through June 2011.  The space is available from 2pm to 6pm and/or 6pm to 10pm Monday thru Saturday except holidays.  Space is only available during these hours.  Space requests must be submitted to and approved by NoMAA.  The Dwyer Cultural Center will not accept direct requests from groups or individuals.  Upon approval of your request by NoMAA, a confirmation email will be sent to you.  For more information contact: info@nomaanyc.org.

Northern Manhattan’s annual arts festival returns this June! The Uptown Arts Stroll invites neighborhood residents and visitors from the rest of the city to a month of art exhibitions, performances, and more, north of W. 155th Street.
NoMAA is calling for submissions for the Uptown Arts Stroll 2011 poster contest:
Specifications:
1. Artist may submit only one image for consideration.
2. Artist must be a resident of Washington Heights or Inwood.
3. Image will be used for publications with the following dimensions:
• Poster: 11 X 17 in.
• Brochure: 6 X 10 ¾ in.
• Postcard: 5 ½ X 8 ½ in.
4. Allow for full color and B&W reproduction.
5. The selected image will be used in the poster that will represent and promote the Uptown Arts Stroll 2011. NoMAA will be responsible for the text that will be included in the poster, not the artist submitting the entry. Please leave space for text.
6. A panel of judges drawn from the local arts community will give extra consideration to eye-catching original and unpublished images that reflect the arts community of Northern Manhattan.
